Woman Searches For Mother For 50 Years, Discovers Amazing Coincidence
Teresa had never known her biological mother. and there had always been something missing in her life. She ha never been able to get over that early rejection. One day, the law was changed, allowing her to find her mom. Her quest revealed two big surprises.
Feeling Of Abandonment
Teresa, a 47-year old woman from Middlebranch, Ohio, had been given up for adoption as a baby. Growing up, she had always felt different, and it had shaped her personality. From a very young age she had noticed that she looked different to her parents and her sister.
Although she was loved by her family and had only good memories of her childhood, Theresa had always felt that there was something missing. She felt abandoned, and was desperate to know why her mom had given her up – had she not been good enough for her?
As Theresa got older and began to understand more about the world, she realized that she should not take her mother’s actions personally – there are many reasons that a person might give up their child for adoption. But she could never shake that feeling that she wasn’t enough, and it affected her self-esteem.
Her adoptive mother had always told Theresa that her birth mother had given her away exactly because she loved her so much, but Theresa had never bought that. She wondered if this mystery woman ever thought about her, and if she’d ever regretted giving her up her daughter.
Notice In The Paper
One day, Theresa was drinking her morning coffee and reading a newspaper when she saw something that made her heart skip a beat. A new law had been passed – adoptees could now go to city hall and be presented with their original birth certificates. She went through that day in a state of shock.
She’d fantasized about this her entire life, but now that it was a reality, she felt paralyzed. She told her sister, Vanessa, about what she’d read. Vanessa only asked her when she was planning to go because she wanted to be there to support her.
One Of Thousands
Theresa went to the courthouse on the very first day that the new law took effect. She was not alone – thousands of adoptees had gathered to send applications. While the crowd at the courthouse was celebrating, Theresa saw that many of the faces of the people around her looked more determined than happy.
She realized that she was not the only one who had grown up with inner demons and waited too long to put them to bed. Her turn arrived at the counter and she paid her $20 to apply for the certificate. “I feel like I’m going to throw up,” she said.
Help From The Sister
Theresa had never even considered that her biological mom might be looking for her. Of course, she didn’t know this for sure, but it would have been too painful to hope that she might be out there somewhere looking for her.
Theresa could not deal with another rejection, so she just suppressed these thoughts in her mind. However, she was soon to get a pleasant surprise on that front, courtesy of her sister. You see, while Theresa had been waiting for her birth certificate to arrive, Vanessa had been doing some investigations herself and had discovered something interesting.
A Pleasant Surprise
Vanessa knew how important this was to her sister, so she decided to do more than just offer emotional support. She logged on to the local adoption website and entered her sister’s birth date into the search bar. She didn’t tell Theresa that she was doing this, because she didn’t want to get her hopes up.
But she received a pleasant surprise – Theresa appeared on the website, which meant that her birth mom had registered herself. This meant that she was in fact interested in finding her long-lost daughter.
More Than Just A Name
Vanessa called Theresa over to the computer and told her to take a seat, before revealing to her birth mother’s name. A tear rolled down Vanessa’s face as she felt a huge psychological weight lift off her shoulders. The two sisters entered the name into a social media website, but there were no results.
At that moment, Theresa didn’t even care – knowing that her birth mom was in some way interested in her was almost enough to satisfy her completely. Almost.
Following The Trail
They did some more digging, and discovered the high school that her mom had attended more than 40 years earlier. It was a local school, which in and of itself was not surprising. What was surprising was that there was someone else who attended the school, someone very close to Theresa.
Someone who knew the school well, and could help them gain them access to the library and records of past students. Theresa and Vanessa looked at each other, almost not believing the twist of fate that had appeared before them.
This surprising contact was none other than Theresa’s son. He was still enrolled at the school and attended every day. That evening, Theresa asked him if he would mind if she were to come in and go through old yearbooks. He told her that he would be happy to help. Theresa made the drive the very next day with her husband Jimmy.
Soon they found themselves sitting in the school library with a pile of yearbooks before them. Theresa hid her nerves with a big smile.
Support From The Husband
What would she find inside? Would her mother even be there? Would she look similar to her? She flicked through the pages of black and white photographs, not knowing what she would find. This was more than a hunt for a photograph – she was searching for a missing piece of her identity, a hole she had felt keenly since childhood.
Jimmy sat beside her, holding her hand. He knew very well how important this was to his wife, but he worried that she might not like what she’d find.
Black And White
Theresa found her mother at the bottom of page 45 of a yearbook from 1975. Never had a photograph had such an effect on her. The girl in the photograph had a blonde bob haircut and had posed with her formal-looking smile. Her name was Chris.
It was like looking in a mirror. The resemblance was undeniable – not only the teeth, the nose, the cheekbones and eyes, but Theresa even wore her hair in a similar fashion. “I think she was adorable,” said Theresa.
Determined To Find An Answer
Vanessa and Jimmy both worried though. Theresa was behaving like a hound which had caught a scent, and they wished that she’d take a moment to think that she might not like what she found. Who was the woman waiting at the end of the search?
Theresa was looking for a missing piece of herself, but nobody knew anything about that missing piece. Maybe she’d be better off without it. But for Theresa, that didn’t matter. She was sick and tired of not knowing.
This was why Vanessa, who was also adopted, had not begun her own search yet. “Once you go there, you can never go back,” she said. Vanessa was more concerned about the happiness of her sister – she had never felt so strongly about discovering her own past.
When Theresa’s original birth certificate finally arrived, the two sisters sat together on the bed and held the envelope. Theresa realized that she just couldn’t bring herself to open it, so she gave it to Vanessa.
But when Vanessa made to rip open the package, Theresa stopped her. This was too big, too much of a leap. She decided that she’d make contact with a support group of adoptees – she wanted to hear the stories of other people in similar situations so she wouldn’t feel so alone. She passed another few days with
She went to the group and sat with the others. Talking to them before the session started made her feel better already. These were people who could understand what she was going through.
Something In Common
The group sat in a circle and took turns to share their experiences. Theresa sat with the envelope in her hand, her nerves mounting as her turn to speak approached. She was under no obligation to open the envelope of course, but she had set this up in her mind as a deadline.
But as her nerves grew, so did her courage. She listened to the other adoptees and realized that she wasn’t the only one who felt abandoned.
In Her Own World
As the man next to her spoke, Theresa couldn’t hear a word. She knew that as soon as he finished there would be a round of applause from the group, and then it would be her turn. The only thing in her mind was a countdown clock, and the envelope felt heavy in her sweating hands.
She became lost in her thoughts, remembering all the fantasies that she’d had about her mother as a girl. And then came the clapping, and the spotlight was on her.
Theresa didn’t speak. She knew that if she started talking she might find an excuse not to open the envelope. She lifted the thing up and ripped the corner, inserted a nail and slid it along. She reflected on how funny it is that a simple piece of paper could cause her such overwhelming feelings.
She took out her old birth certificate and looked. What she saw made her do a double-take – it was almost unbelievable.
Coincidence? Or God?
The others in the group had been respectfully quiet until now, understanding that Theresa was doing something momentous for herself. But their curiosity was now piqued, and they asked what she’s seen that surprised her so much.
Theresa told them. Her biological mother had named her Theresa – the same name as her adopted mother. The latter had no access to prior information, so this was an amazing coincidence.
Or not, as Theresa believed. She said: “I’m a person of faith and I think this is totally God’s plan.” Theresa said that this was a wink from God, a sign that she had always been who she was supposed to be. “It’s proof that I’m real,” said Theresa, as she looked at the aging piece of paper, filled with hand-written information in black ink.
Now that she had taken this first plunge, it was relatively easy to take the next step – searching for a phone number and making that call.
With her husband beside her, and filled with new confidence, she heard the phone ring and a voice answer. Theresa had prepared what she was going to say, just in case she got tongue-tied at the big moment.
“Hi Chris, how are you?” she began. “I didn’t know if you were aware but they just opened adoption records in Ohio, and I actually just opened my birth certificate yesterday.” Her voice began to crack as she got to the next part.
Tears Of Joy
“The birth mother on my records is Christine, and I’m pretty sure that I’m the person that you’ve been looking for for a while.”
On the other end of the line was a woman who had been missing her daughter for almost 50 years. Listening to the voice on the phone broke her heart. “My daughter, my daughter,” she cried. “I just wanted you to know that I never wanted to give you up.” Theresa didn’t know what to say – it was just too much.
Driving To Destiny
“I just wanted to make sure it was OK that I called you,” said Theresa. “Oh for heaven’s sake,” answered her mom – “I’ve been looking for you for years!”
Theresa laughed and felt like a new woman. The two arranged to meet. But as Theresa made the drive to her birth mom’s house, she still had only one thing on her mind – she needed to know why her mom had given her away as a baby.
n Emotional Reunio
Chris lived in a beautiful home in the suburbs of a nearby city, with a manicured lawn and a big red car. Theresa parked in the drive, and Chris was on the drive waiting for her. The two approached each other in an atmosphere charged with emotion.
Chris touched her daughter’s face for the first time in 47 years, while Theresa cried “you’re real, you’re real!” They embraced for a very long time, before comparing heights, hands and faces.
Revealing The Past
They sat together and talked. Theresa finally found the answers to all of her questions, including the main one that she was afraid to ask – if her mom had ever wanted her.
Chris had been 17 when she fell pregnant by her high-school sweetheart. At that time, it was unacceptable to be an unwed mother, and the relationship with her beau fell apart. Her parents sent her to a home for unwed mothers, where she was kept for five months until her child was born.
She hadn’t even been allowed to hold Theresa before the nurses had taken her away. Chris told her daughter that not a day went by when she didn’t think about her, and she had been searching for decades. In fact, she had induced the birth of one of her later children when she realized that he might be born on Theresa’s birthday. She said that she wanted to save that date as it was special to Theresa.
Soon after the meeting, Vanessa began looking for her own birth mother, inspired by her sister’s bravery.
