For some, the expatriate lifestyle is about as good as it gets. There’s just something appealing about dropping everything you’re used to so you can live and work in a far-off place you’ve never been to. Plus, with today’s technology and ever-changing workplace, it’s easier than ever to earn a living while staying constantly on the road. However, not every destination in the world is economically friendly to expatriates. Here’s a look at some of the most expensive cities in the world to live and work remotely, according to the Mercer Mobility Exchange.

The top spot in terms of expensive cities goes to Hong Kong. As one of the busiest cities on the planet, it’s probably no surprise to learn that all that action comes with a price. Remote workers and expats love hanging in coffee shops, and a cup of coffee in Hong Kong will run you roughly $8 (USD). Planning to drive a car?  You can expect to pay around $7.50 per gallon for fuel.

As it turns out, the entire Asian continent is pretty expensive for folks looking to live and work remotely. The number two, three, and four spots belong to Tokyo, Singapore, and Seoul, respectively.

The value of the U.S. dollar has steadily climbed over the past several years, and as a result, some U.S. cities have made Mercer’s list of some of the most expensive cities in the world. New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles all made the top 20 list of most expensive cities to live.

On the other hand, the value of the euro has dropped thanks to economic concerns and security issues. So, if the idea of living and working in Europe appeals to you, you’re in luck!  In fact, only one European city—Zurich—made the list of the top 10 most expensive cities.
